When and how to pack your hospital bag
When should you pack?
Midwives recommend having your bag ready by the 32nd week of pregnancy, around the start of the 7th month. Labor can start sooner than expected, and you don't want to be running around the apartment at 3 a.m. between contractions.
One bag or two?
Best practice is to pack two separate bags:
- A small "delivery-day" bag you bring to the delivery room: labor outfit, water mister, charger, partner's essentials.
- A "stay" suitcase that stays in the car or at reception, brought to your room once baby is born. That's where you put your outfits, toiletries, baby's clothes for the following days.
The 3 classic mistakes
- Overpacking. A typical hospital stay is 3 to 4 days. You don't need 15 outfits. 3 to 4 comfortable pajamas are plenty.
- Forgetting paperwork. Insurance card, blood type, pregnancy folder: these are checked first at admission. Put them in a dedicated folder, on top.
- Neglecting the trip home. The car seat, season-appropriate going-home outfit, a blanket: prepare these in advance, not the day you leave in a panic.
What about baby?
At most hospitals, diapers and formula (if bottle-feeding) are provided. What you need to bring: bodysuits, pajamas, socks, a hat, a going-home outfit, and a small blanket. Pack bodysuits in 1-month and newborn size: you never know the exact size at discharge.
Frequently asked questions
When should you pack the hospital bag?
By the 32nd week of pregnancy, around the 7th month. This leaves a safety margin in case of premature labor.
How many outfits should you pack for baby?
For a typical 3 to 4 day stay, plan 5 to 7 complete outfits (bodysuit + pajama + socks). Babies spit up often, so it's better to have a buffer.
Do you need to bring your own diapers?
Most hospitals provide diapers during the stay. Bring a small newborn-size pack for the trip home.
What paperwork should you bring?
Insurance card, supplemental insurance card, blood type record, pregnancy folder, family booklet (or paternity acknowledgment if not married), and photo ID.
How many bags should you prepare?
Ideally two: a small bag for delivery day, and a larger suitcase for the room stay.
Is my progress really saved?
Yes — the checklist is stored locally in your browser. You can close the tab and come back later, your checked items and custom additions are preserved. Note: if you switch devices or clear browser data, progress is lost.
